ASTM A403 WP316L covers the standard for wrought austenitic stainless steel fittings for pressure piping applications. The material of pipe fittings shall include forgings, bars, plates or seamless or welded pipes. Forging or forming operations shall be performed by hammering, pressing, piercing, extruding, upsetting, rolling, bending, fusion welding, machining, or a combination of two or more of these operations. All accessories should be heat treated.
Chemical and product analysis should be performed and should meet
the required chemical composition of carbon, manganese, phosphorus,
sulfur, silicon, chromium, molybdenum and titanium. Tensile tests
should be performed on fitting materials to determine tensile
properties such as yield strength and tensile strength. Accessories
supplied in accordance with this specification shall be visually
inspected for surface discontinuities, surface inspections, and
mechanical markings.
Butt welded pipe fittings are designed to be field welded at their
ends to join pipes together and allow for changes in direction or
pipe diameter, or branching or ending.
The accessory then becomes part of a system for transporting fluids
(oil, gas, steam, chemicals...) over short or long distances in a
safe and efficient manner.
Other types of fittings can be threaded or socket welded.

CR | Corrosion resistant grade. S through WU Classes do not apply. |
WP-S | Seamless |
WP-W | Welded, RT or UT all pipe starting material welds made with filler
metal. All fitting manufacturer welds except as excluded in A/SA403
paragraph 5.4.3. If UT is substituted for RT, all welds must be examined 100% for their length as required by A/SA403 paragraph 5.6 |
WP-WX | RT all welds with or without filler metal. |
WP-WU | UT all welds with or without filler metal. |
WPgrade-grade-class | Insert grades (304-304L) and class (S,W,WX, or WU). Applies to fittings meeting all chemical and physical requirements of both grades. |
ASTM A403 WP316L is a low carbon version of 316 and is not affected by sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). Therefore, it is widely used for heavy-duty welded parts (about 6mm and more). There is usually no discernible price difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel.
ASTM A403 WP316 is the standard molybdenum grade, second only to 304 in importance in austenitic stainless steels. Compared to 304, molybdenum imparts better overall corrosion resistance to 316, especially higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even at low temperatures.
Compared to chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels, 316L stainless steel has higher creep, rupture stress and tensile strength at elevated temperatures.
YUHONG GROUP supplies a full range of products in ASTM A403 WP316, including elbows, tees, reducers, end caps, fittings, etc.
