AS/NZS 5100 Steel Box Girder Bridges Long Span Multicell Prefab Highway

The growth of highway systems across the world has lead to lots of changes in the development as well as uses of different types of bridges, among which box girders are almost indispensable for long bridges to keep the self-weight of the main structure as low as feasible. According to the width requirements single or multiple cell girders are chosen. And steel box girders are very much in demand. They are commonly used for highway bridges with long spans.

A box or tubular girder is a girder that forms an enclosed tube with multiple walls, as opposed to an I- or H-beam. Originally constructed of riveted wrought iron, they are now made of rolled or welded steel, aluminium extrusions or prestressed concrete. 

Compared to an I-beam, the advantage of a box girder is that it better resists torsion. Having multiple vertical webs, it can also carry more load than an I-beam of equal height (although it will use more material than a taller I-beam of equivalent capacity).
