Alloy C-276 (2.4819/N10276) can be used in many chemical processes with both oxidizing as well as reducing media. The high chrome and molybdenum concentrations make the alloy resistant to chloride ion attacks. The tungsten content further increases this resistance.

Corrosion resistance:

In both oxidizing and reducing environments, Hastelloy C276 performs exceptionally well. It is resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, crevice corrosion, and general corrosion. As a
The alloy is also resistant to carbide precipitation during welding, allowing it to be used as welded.
This alloy is exceptionally resistant to sulfuric, hydrochloric, formic, acetic, and phosphoric acids in chemical processing applications. The alloy C276 performs well in environments containing acid chlorides, solvents, and acetic acids.
Chlorine anhydride is one of the few that can withstand wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite, and chlorine dioxide solutions.

Alloy C276 is highly resistant to concentrated solutions of oxidizing salts, including iron chloride and copper chloride. Also, it performs well in seawater, especially under crevice conditions, where other commonly used alloys, such as stainless steel,
Alloy 400, steel, and alloy 625 fail. Flue gas desulfurization systems operate under the following conditions.
Corrosion-resistant materials must cope with a challenging environment. Chlorides are often found in scrubber liquors and gas condensates. The alloy C276 has been shown to withstand higher chloride levels than other grades before localized corrosion occurs.

Hastelloy C276 is commonly used to recover and process sour natural gas that contains hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and chlorides. The corrosive environment cannot be tolerated by carbon and alloy steels. They can fail due to sulfide stress cracking or stress corrosion cracking. Despite high temperatures and acidic environments, Alloy C276 resists acidic environments.

Data on Fabrication:

Standard fabrication practices for austenitic stainless steels and nickel-based alloys can be used to weld and process alloy C276.

The process of hot forming is as follows:

Alloy C276 has a hot-working temperature range of 1600–2250°F (870–1230°C). After hot working, the alloy should be water quenched. For maximum corrosion resistance, heat treatment is recommended after hot working.

Forming by cold

For cold working, alloy C276 should be annealed. The alloy has a higher work hardening rate than austenitic stainless steels. A high degree of hard-working may require to anneal neal. A solution may be needed if the alloy undergoes deformation during cold working.

Hastelloy C276 welding:

Most standard welding processes are compatible with alloy C276, including GTAW (TIG), PLASMA, GMAW (MIG/MAG), and SMAW (MMA). Post-weld heat treatment is not required. With a stainless steel wire brush, you can remove the heat tint after welding and prevent the need for additional pickling.

The machining of Hastelloy C276:

If possible, Hastelloy C276 should be machined in the annealed condition. Because Alloy C276 is prone to work hardening, only low cutting speeds should be used, and the cutting tool should always be engaged. To avoid contact with previously formed work-hardened zones, adequate cut depth is necessary.

Application of C276 Nickel Alloy

Alloy C-276 has a broad field of application in the chemicals and petrochemicals industry, for components in organic processes containing chlorides, and for catalytic systems. The material can be used especially in cases where hot, contaminated mineral acids, solutions or organic acids (such as formic acid and acetic acid) and sea water occur. Examples of applications:

  • Paper and pulp industry, e.g. for digestion and bleaching tanks
  • Washers, agitators and wet ventilators in flue gas desulfurization systems
  • Equipment and components for acid gas applications
  • Reactors for acetic acid production
  • Sulfuric acid coolers
  • Methylene diphenyl isocyanate (MDI)
  • Manufacturing and processing of contaminated phosphoric acid
  • Substrates for high temperature superconductors
