1. Carbon (C): the carbon content of steel increases, the yield point and tensile strength increase, but the plasticity and impact are reduced. When the carbon content exceeds 0.23%, the welding performance of steel deteriorates. Therefore, the carbon content of the low-alloy structural steel used for welding is generally not more than 0.20%. High carbon quantity can also reduce the atmospheric corrosion resistance of steel, and the high carbon steel in the open material yard will easily cause corrosion; in addition, carbon can increase the cold brittle and aging sensitivity of steel.

2. Silicon (Si): Silicon is added as a reducing agent and deoxygenation agent in the steelmaking process, so the sedated steel contains 0.15-0.30% silicon. If the steel contains more than 0.50-0.60% of silicon, silicon is an alloy element. Silicon can significantly improve the elastic limit, yield point and tensile strength of steel, so it is widely used as spring steel. Adding 1.0-1.2% silicon to the adjusted structural steel can increase the strength by 15-20%. Silicon and molybdenum, tungsten, chromium and other combination, has the effect of improving corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance, can make heat-resistant steel. Low carbon steel containing 1-4% silicon, has extremely high magnetic conductivity, used in electrical appliances industry to do silicon steel sheet. Increased amount of silicon will reduce the welding performance of steel.

3, Manganese (Mn): in the process of steelmaking, manganese is a good deoxygenation agent and desulfurizer, generally steel contains manganese 0.30-0.50%. When more than 0.70% is added to carbon steel, it is considered "manganese steel", compared with the general steel volume of steel not only has enough toughness, but also has high strength and hardness, improve the quenching of steel, improve the thermal processing performance of steel, such as 16Mn steel is 40% higher than A3 yield point. Steel containing 11-14% of manganese has extremely high wear resistance, used for excavator bucket, ball mill liner plate, etc. Higher manganese amount, weaken the corrosion resistance of steel, reduce the welding performance.

4. Phosphorus (P): Under normal circumstances, phosphorus is a harmful element in steel, increasing the cold brittleness of steel, breaking the welding performance, reducing the plasticity, and damaging the cold bending performance. Therefore, the phosphorus content of steel is usually less than 0.045%, and the quality steel is lower.

5. Sulfur (S): Sulfur is also a harmful element. Make the steel produce hot brittleness, reduce the ductility and toughness of the steel, causing cracks when forging and rolling. Sulfur is also unfavorable to welding performance and reduces corrosion resistance. So sulfur content is less than 0.055% and quality steel is less than 0.040%. The addition of 0.08-0.20% sulfur to the steel can improve the cutting and processing ability, usually called easy cutting steel.

6. Chromium (Cr): In structural steel and tool steel, chromium can significantly improve the strength, hardness and wear resistance, but also reduce the plasticity and toughness. Chromium can also improve the oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance of steel, so it is an important alloy element of stainless steel and heat resistance steel.

7, Nickel (Ni): Nickel can improve the strength of steel, while maintain good plasticity and toughness. Nickel has high corrosion resistance to acid and alkali, rust resistance and heat resistance at high temperature. However, because nickel is a scarce resource, other alloy elements should be used to replace nickel-chromium steel.

8. Molybdenum (Mo): molybdenum can refine the grain of steel, improve the quenching property and thermal strength performance, and maintain enough strength and creep resistance at high temperature (long-term under high temperature stress, deformation, called creep). Molybdenum added to the structural steel can improve the mechanical properties. And the brittleness of alloy steel can also be suppressed due to quenching. Redness can be improved in tool steel.

9. Titanium (Ti): Titanium is a strong deoxigator in steel. It can compact the internal organization of steel and reduce the grain sensitivity and cold strength. Improve the welding performance. Adding appropriate titanium to chromium 18 nickel 9 austenitic stainless steel avoids intercrystalline corrosion.

10, Vanadium (V): vanadium is an excellent deoxygenation agent of steel. Adding 0.5% vanadium to the steel can refine the tissue grains to improve the strength and toughness. The carbide formed by vanadium and carbon can improve the hydrogen corrosion resistance at high temperature and high pressure.

11, Tungsten (W): tungsten melting point, than, is an alloy element. Tungsten and carbon formation tungsten carbide has a very high hardness and wear resistance. In the tool steel plus tungsten, can significantly improve the red hardness and thermal strength, for cutting tools and forging mold.

12. Niobium (Nb): Niobium can refine grains and reduce the overheating sensitivity and tempering brittleness of steel, and improve the strength, but the plasticity and toughness can decrease. Adding niobium to ordinary low alloy steel can improve the resistance to atmospheric corrosion and hydrogen, nitrogen and ammonia at high temperature. Niobium can improve the welding performance. Adding niobium to austenitic stainless steel can prevent intercrystalline corrosion.

13. Cobalt (Co): Cobalt is a rare and precious metal, mostly used in special steel and alloys, such as hot-strong steel and magnetic materials.

14. Copper (Cu): The steel made by Daye ore often contains copper. Copper can improve its strength and toughness, especially its atmospheric corrosive properties. The disadvantage is that it is easy to produce hot fragility during hot processing, and the copper content exceeds 0.5%. When the copper content is less than 0.50%, it has no effect on the weldability.

15. Aluminum (Al): Aluminum is a commonly used deoxygen in steel. Adding a small amount of aluminum to the steel can refine the grain and improve the impact toughness, such as 08Al steel for deep flush sheet. Aluminum also has oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance, aluminum and chromium, silicon combination, can significantly improve the high temperature of steel without skin performance and high temperature corrosion resistance. The disadvantage of aluminum is that it affects the thermal machining performance, welding performance and cutting performance of steel.

16. Boron (B): Adding a trace amount of boron to the steel can improve the density and hot rolling performance of the steel, and improve the strength.

17. Nitrogen (N): nitrogen can improve the strength of steel, low temperature toughness and weldability, and increase the aging sensitivity.

18. Rare earth (Xt): Rare earth elements refer to the 15 lanthanides with the number of 57-71 atoms in the periodic table. These elements are all metals, but their oxides are very much like "earth", so they are habitually called rare earths. The addition of rare earth to steel can change the composition, morphology, distribution and properties of the inclusions in steel, thus improving the various properties of steel, such as toughness, weldability, and cold processing properties. Adding rare earth to the ploughshare steel can improve the wear resistance.

Alloy steel contains more other elements than carbon steel
