SAEF Technology SFEPD154B-7099A-BWR is an Active Matrix Electrophoretic Display(AM EPD), with interface and a reference system design. The 1.54” active area contains 200x200 pixels, and has 2-bit full display capabilities. The module is a TFT-array driving electrophoretic display, with integrated circuits including gate buffer, source buffer, SPI interface, timing control logic, oscillator, DC-DC, SRAM, LUT, VCOM. Module can be used in portable electronic devices, such as Electronic Shelf Label (ESL) System.

Operating Temperature

The operation temp is -0-50C, storage temp is -20-60C. 90 %RH Max. (Ta ≦ 40 ºC), where Ta is ambient temperature.

Wet-bulb temperature should be 39 ºC Max. (Ta > 40 ºC).No condensation and no frost in absolute ratings of Environment.

The temperature of panel display surface area should be 0 ºC Min. and 50ºC Max. Refresh time depends on operating temperature.
E-Ink Material is Moisture and UV sensitive. The absolute rating operating environments describes the boundary conditions for updating the display while the absolute rating storage environment describe the boundary conditions for a display not updating. While displays are rated to perform according to specification for the warranty period at the absolute specified operating environment, the better the storage condition, the better the E Ink displays will perform. Similar to other moisture and UV sensitive components, we recommend that our displays be stored in temperature and humidity control environments, and whenever possible, under above defined Optimal Storage Condition, away from sunlight, to optimize their performance.
 

Precaution
(1) The EPD Panel / Module is manufactured from fragile materials such as glass and plastic, and may be broken or cracked if dropped. Please handle with care. Do not apply force such as bending or twisting to the EPD panel.
(2) It is recommended to assemble or install EPD panels in a clean working area. Dust and oil may cause electrical shorts or degrade / scratch / dent the protection sheet film.
(3) Do not apply pressure to the EPD panel in order to prevent damaging it.
(4) Do not connect or disconnect the interface connector while the EPD panel is in operation.
(5) Please support the bezel with your finger while connecting the interface cable such as the FPC.
(6) Do not stack the EPD panels / Modules.
(7) Do not press the FPC on the glass edge or Pull FPC up / down to 90°.
(8) Do not touch the FPC lead connector.
(9) Do not touch IC bonding area. It may scratch TFT lead or damage IC function.
(10) Wear a Wrist Strap (Grounding connect) when handling and during assembly. Semiconductor devices are included in the EPD Panel / Module and they should be handled with care to prevent any electrostatic discharge (ESD). (An Ion Fan may be needed in assembly operation to reduce ESD risk.)
(11) Keep the EPD Panel / Module in the specified environment and original packing boxes when storage in order to avoid scratching and keep original performance.
(12) Do not disassemble or reassemble the EPD panel.
(13) Use a soft dry cloth without chemicals for cleaning. Please don’t press hard for cleaning because the surface of the protection sheet film is very soft and without hard coating. This behavior would make dent or scratch on protection sheet.
(14) Please be mindful of moisture to avoid its penetration into the EPD panel, which may cause damage during operation.
(15) It’s low temperature operation product. Please be mindful the temperature different to make frost or dew on the surface of EPD panel. Moisture may penetrate into the EPD panel because of frost or dew on surface of EPD panel, and makes EPD panel damage.
(16) If the EPD Panel / Module is not refreshed every 24 hours, a phenomena known as “Ghosting” or “Image Sticking” may occur. It is recommended that customer refreshed the ESL / EPD Tag every 24 hours in use case. It is recommended that customer ships or stores the ESL / EPD Tag with a completely white image to avoid this issue
(17) High temperature, high humidity, sunlight or fluorescent light may degrade the EPD panel’s performance. Please do not expose the unprotected EPD panel to high temperature, high humidity, sunlight, or fluorescent for long periods of time.
(18) The label ink used for marking the Panel ID number is erased easily by solvent. Please avoid using solvent to clean the EPD panel.
(19) The EPD is vacuum packed.
(20) Before approved by BOE and customer, products and product specifications may be subject to change without notice. Confirm that you have received the latest product standards or specifications before final design, purchase or use.
(21) BOE makes every attempt to ensure that its products are of high quality and reliability. However, contact BOE sales office before using the product in an application that demands especially high quality and reliability or where its failure or malfunction may directly threaten human life or cause risk of bodily injury, such as aerospace, aeronautics, nuclear power, combustion control, transportation, traffic, safety equipment or medical equipment for life support.
(22) Design your application so that the product is used within the ranges guaranteed by SAEF particularly for maximum rating, operating supply voltage range, heat radiation characteristics, installation conditions and other characteristics. SAEF bears no responsibility for failure or damage when used beyond the guaranteed ranges. Even within the guaranteed ranges, consider normally foreseeable failure rates or failure modes in semiconductor devices and employ systemic measures such as fail safes, so that the equipment incorporating SAEF product does not cause bodily injury, fire or other consequential damage due to operation of the SAEF product.
(23) This product is not designed to be radiation resist

 

The e-ink screen has rich application scenarios, and the B/C end is two-wheel drive

As a new display technology, e-paper expands terminal application scenarios in the field of flat panel display. Parallel with LCD, LED, OLED, e-paper is essentially a kind of flat panel display technology, also known as e-ink screen, which can imitate the visual perception of printing and writing on paper. E-paper products have the characteristics of bendability, ultra-thinness, and can maintain the display even when the power is off, and the core characteristics are low power consumption and visual health, which can be called a new display technology that is "small but beautiful".

 

The characteristics of e-ink screen products are outstanding, and the downstream application scenarios are rapidly expanding. The characteristics of e-paper related products are centered on paper-like substitution and low power consumption, and gradually develop to B/C application scenarios after the combination of cost reduction and new demand. 1) C-end products take e-book readers as the core, extending to notebooks and computer monitors, watch bracelets and other wearable products, smart home and other application fields; 2) The B-end is the key development and application field of the current market, and the product takes the low-power IoT retail market as the main application scenario, and expands to the fields of smart retail, smart logistics, smart transportation, smart industry, smart healthcare, and smart education.

 

Microencapsulation electrophoresis technology occupies the mainstream position of electronic ink screen display. The core technology of the e-ink screen is the design of the display module scheme, of which the microcapsule electrophoresis technology is the mainstream scheme. The product design consists of a TFT substrate and two layers of electrodes, sandwiched between positively charged black particles and negatively charged white particles. This technology uses the principle of positive and negative attraction, by applying electrodes to control the pixels to display black or white, and you can also adjust the voltage size to control the position of the black or white particles from the top display area to display gray.

 

Driven by the demand for terminal applications, the e-ink screen market has ushered in a period of rapid growth. According to TrendForce statistics and forecasts, the total size of the global e-ink screen market was US$3.1 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach US$20.34 billion in 2026, with a compound annual growth rate of 45.62% from 2021 to 2026E. In terms of end-use applications, consumer electronics accounted for the largest market share in 2021, reaching 53.70%. Combined with Mordor Intelligence statistics and forecasts, the growth rate of other end-use markets will be at the highest level among all end-use segments during the forecast period, with a CAGR of 52.20% from 2021 to 2026E.

 

The upstream concentration of the e-ink screen industry is high, the characteristics of industrial clusters in the midstream field are becoming increasingly prominent, and the downstream terminal brands tend to be diversified. The upstream diaphragm manufacturers are dominated by Taiwan's Yuantai Technology with its leading technology, and other suppliers include Guangzhou Aoyi Electronics, which generally presents an oligopoly pattern. Midstream module manufacturers have formed industrial clusters including Yuantai Technology, BOE, Qingyue Optoelectronics, Yashi Optoelectronics, etc., accounting for more than 90% of the global e-paper module market share, and the characteristics of clusters are becoming increasingly prominent. Downstream terminal manufacturers include consumer electronics manufacturers such as Zhangyue Technology, ESL solution providers such as Hanshow Technology, and with the continuous addition of application software brands such as iFLYTEK, the types of manufacturers tend to diversify.

 

The value of the display module of e-ink screen products accounts for a prominent proportion, and the middle and upstream fields are the core links of the industrial chain. Taking Kindle e-book readers as an example, display modules account for more than 40% of the hardware cost share of the whole machine, followed by communication modules accounting for about 20%, processors and related chips accounting for about 20%, and structural parts, PCBs and other hardware parts accounting for about 10% of the remaining share. We believe that the middle and upper reaches of the industrial chain are the core of the competitive landscape, and the situation that the large-scale commercialization of e-paper products is limited by the continued high price of single products will be gradually broken. We recommend focusing on investment opportunities in the middle and upper reaches of the value chain.
