Why does metal need to be laser cleaned?
There can be many reasons that this process needs to be used on
metals, and you’ll find it being used in everything from the
aerospace to the food manufacturing industry. It’s used for
applications such as:
• Cleaning baking trays
• Preparing metals for welding treatment
• Removing paint from a selected area
• Removing traffic film and dirt from planes, buses, etc.
1. Powerful, short pulses, fast-moving laser pulses act on the
surface of the target material, producing tiny plasma ruptures,
shock waves, thermal stress and etc., then make the surface
materials to sublimate and evaporate.
2. The laser beam is capable of accurately evaporating surface
objects or dirt.
3. Laser cleaning is suitable for metal surfaces. The treated and
optimized laser beam does not alter metal properties or damage
those laser-treated surfaces. The precisely tuned laser beam acts
only on the coating, residual residue or oxide, and does not harm
the underlying parent metal surface.
4. By adjusting other parameters, the laser beam is able to achieve
the desired cleaning effect accurately and easily.

How is laser cleaning different?
Laser cleaning looked to solve the problems presented by other
processes, and it has managed to do this to a large degree. Perhaps
the biggest difference with using a laser to other processes is
that it is a non-contact and non-abrasive process. Only the laser
light will actually be touching and working with the surface of the
material, and this heated energy essentially blasts off the
material from the surface layer.
This process can be repeated until the correct level of ablation
depth has been reached, and fiber lasers, in particular, offer a
great level of control to their users. This means that the desired
depth can be achieved with a high degree of accuracy, on metal
surfaces such as clearing rust for example.
While the final result is similar to the other cleaning processes,
the way in which the actual operation is completed is what makes
laser cleaning different.
