What is an Oxygen Sensor ?
The oxygen sensor, also known as a lambda sensor, was developed in the late 1960s by Dr. Gunter Bauman for the Robert Bosch GmbH company. This sensor is an electronic device used to measure the proportional amount of oxygen in a liquid or gas. The original oxygen sensor was made using ceramic coated zirconia and platinum. In order to make the O2 sensor more capable of mass production, planar oxygen sensors were developed. This modernized O2 sensor was developed by NTK in 1990 for use in the Honda Civic and Accord. Made using layers of High Temperature Cofired Ceramic (HTCC) green tapes, the current style of sensor is made more efficient than the original style sensors.
Oxygen Sensor install position:
The oxygen sensor is located in the exhaust manifold downpipes before the catalytic converter or between the exhaust manifolds and the catalytic converters.
Oxygen Sensor Function:
The oxygen sensor works by sending information to your vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU) to help your car run efficiently as well as to reduce emissions.
How to know Oxygen Sensor failure ?
There are some clear signs that your oxygen sensor is no longer functioning.
They can include:
1. Check engine light on
2. A rotten egg odor emitting from the exhaust.
3. A reduction in fuel economy.
4. Your catalytic converter fails unexpectedly.
5. Exhaust emissions reach undesirable levels.
6. Your engine surges, hesitates, skips and bucks.
