Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is passed through sexual
contact. The first symptoms normally involve a sore called a
chancre that appears at the site of the infection. This sore will
start off as a raised area and will soon develop into an ulcer. The
ulcer will eventually heal but if the infection is not treated it
will go on to the secondary phase that normally involves a rash and
a sore throat and a general feeling of being unwell. At this stage,
only a blood test will reveal the infection. The third phase is
more serious, where the infection affects the organs, including the
brain. If syphilis is not treated then it can lead to death.
Diagnostic testing for syphilis should be performed on patients
with signs or symptoms of infection. In addition, asymptomatic
patients should be screened for syphilis if they are at high risk
for having acquired disease or for transmitting disease to others.
Serologic testing is generally used to make a diagnosis of
syphilis.
Syphilis can be transmitted orally. The most common transmission is
through oral sex, both giving and receiving.

(approximately 50 uL) to the specimen well (S), then add 1 drop of
buffer (approximately 40 uL), and start the timer. See illustration
below.
For Fingerstick Whole Blood specimen:
- To use a capillary tube: Fill the capillary tube and transfer
approximately 50 uL of fingerstick whole blood specimen to the
specimen well (S) of test device, then add 1 drop of buffer
(approximately 40 uL) and start the timer. See illustration below.
- To use hanging drops: Allow 2 hanging drops of fingerstick whole
blood specimen (approximately 50 uL) to fall into the specimen well
