Major Components and Accessories

Basically, a selective pallet rack is made up of three parts: load beams, upright frames and wire decks or pallet support bars. These three parts, along with many other accessories, work together to provide a basic structure of heavy-duty storage solutions that most modern businesses depend on to organize their inventory.

Load beams, designed with various sizes and weight capacities, are horizontally connected to two vertical columns to hold unit loads.

Upright frames, varied in size and design depending on load requirements and styles. One upright frame consists of two upright columns and several horizontal and diagonal braces. Holes or slots are punched up and down the column at standard intervals during manufacturing. The load beams can be mounted into the columns and stabilize the upright frames.

Pallets support bars, are usually roll formed channels that are placed front to back between the load beams to increase their capacity, which can make pallet rack safer and easier to use by creating extra support and surface area for inventory.

Wire decking, is commonly used as a safety measure on selective pallet rack to prevent pallets or products stored on them from falling through the rack structure. Sitting across load beams, wire decking, an alternative to pallet support, is highly recommended because of its extra protection, increased access and better visibility. Wire decking enables racking systems to be more durable, versatile, and safe.

Row spacers, are sometimes used to tie two back-to-back uprights together to keep them straight and stable, giving more strength and steadiness to the pallet racks eventually. For frames that exceed the RMI recommended height-to-depth ratio of 6:1, row spacers can be used to effectively double the depth of the row by anchoring it to an adjacent one.

Wall ties, acting like row spacers, can be used for further support by bolting a single row of pallet racking to a solid wall for safety concern. The higher the height-to-depth ratio of your pallet rack frames is, the less stable they are. By connecting upright frames to an adjacent wall to get an additional anchor point, wall ties combat this problem perfectly.

Column protectors, also known as post protectors, can safeguard your pallet rack by forming a protective barrier around the columns. Installed around the base of an upright, column protectors can minimize the damage to the columns caused by forklifts, prevent the racks from collapsing or falling down, length the lifespan of your pallet rack eventually.

Anchors, are used to fasten columns of the racking to a facility floor for stability and security. The standard industry recommendation is to anchor all pallet rack frames at all times. The number, type and size of anchor bolts depend on the height and height to width ratio of the racking system, loading method and the amount of equipment traffic, and the geographic and geotechnical environment of the areas.

Base plates, also known as foot plates, are located at the bottom of columns to provide surfaces for anchor bolts to insert through when attaching the columns to the concrete floor. Crucial to the pallet rack’s overall stability and weight-bearing capacity, base plates and anchor bolts work together to keep the racking structure in an upright position, reducing the risk of a collapse and improving the safety of personnel working in the area.

Shims, are used to even out the connection between footplate and floor when the uprights are resting on uneven floors. Equal in size to the base of the uprights, this thin piece of metal are installed beneath the uprights to provide added safety where uneven.

Selective pallet racking systems typically come in one of two configurations: roll formed and structural, the latter have much greater weight-bearing capacity.

Advantages of Selective Pallet Rack

Direct Access

There are a lot of merits of selective pallet racking system, of which direct access and 100% selectivity is the foremost. In selective pallet racks, since loads are stored one pallet deep, it allows unimpeded access to every pallet, which ensuring optimum stock rotation(important if the inventory is rapidly depleted and restocked ).

►Cost-effective

Of the many pallet racking systems available, the selective rack style is the lowest cost pallet storage option with its low initial outlay and ongoing operational costs. Selective pallet racking system is compatible with a wide range of standard materials handling equipment and can be paired with any type of lift truck including counterbalance and reach trucks, thereby assisting in the reduction of capital outlay costs.

►Assemble flexibility

Having numbers of aisle configuration options, selective pallet racks can be very flexible with various components and accessories to choose. And it can be reconfigured or relocated at any time with minimal effort as inventory volume and SKUs naturally fluctuate.

►Storage versatility

With its optimal storage versatility and flexibility, selective racking system is suitable for storage of various products, especially those with many SKUs of low density, inc, food, beverage, bulk liquids, panels, steel sheeting, tiles, tyres, etc.

►Simple stock management

The selective pallet racking system follows the First-in/First-out inventory management method, which means that the items entered into the system first are also removed first. A FIFO system increases operational efficiency, maximizes available warehouse space, and keeps products fresh.

Minimizing the risk of expiration, selective racks make inventory management simple and efficient, especially for companies that have highly differentiated product lines and low turnover volume.

With all the merits though, please pay attention to the other side of the coin before making a final decision.

Anywhere from retail store inventory rooms, storage facilities and distribution centers of all sizes to large industrial applications, this selective racking provides you an ideal storage solution when it comes to accessibility, flexibility, adjustability, and speed of operation and will satisfy your needs in many possible ways, despite of some minor flaws.
