Working Principles

Planetary Reducer is a widely used industrial product that can reduce the speed of the motor and increase the output torque.

Planet reducer is usually closely combined with an inner tooth ring on the teeth box housing. The center of the teeth box has a solar gear driven by an external power, and the three planetary wheels are coincided with the solar wheel. When the planetary decelerator is an external input power driving the solar teeth, it can drive the planetary gear rotation, the output power of the force axis, and reduce the output speed.

In addition to the basic principles of the planetary wheel system, the performance of the planetary deceleration is also affected by many other factors. For example, the selection of materials, the application of thermal treatment process, the processing accuracy of the gear, the design of the assembly, and the design of the lubrication system will affect the performance of the reducer. Therefore, in order to obtain high efficiency, high stability, and long lifetime, strict quality control needs to be implemented in product design, manufacturing and testing etc.

High precision. The planetary reducer uses the planetary gears for power transmission. The number of gears is large and the transmission ratio is large. Therefore, its transmission accuracy is very high and the error is very small. This high precision characteristics have made planetary gearboxes widely applied in many fields. Normally helical gear planetary reducers have higher precision, i.e. lower backlash. And for same type gear reducers, also have higher precision reducers, if they are produced according to different CNC machine precision. Also need to pay attention to that fact that how long this precision can be kept. Kaifull PRMCAS planetary gearboxes can work with precision with average time of 20000hours.

In the market there are some planetary reducers which can work with stepper motors, but without precision, which is not recommended.

Strong loading capacity. The structure of the planetary gearbox is very compact and the gears are evenly distributed, so its loading capacity is very strong and can withstand a large load. Different producer planetary gearboxes loading capacities are normally different, which is related with not only design, but also the materials used.

High transmission efficiency. The transmission efficiency of the planetary reducer is very high, and its efficiency can reach up to 98%! This high-efficiency feature has made planetary reducer widely applied in some applications with high energy consumption requirements. Higher transmission efficiency makes the heating, noises much lower, also help customers to save  power and increase processing quality of workpiece.

Long lifetime. The gears of the planetary reducer are made of high strength, high hardness materials. It is precise processing and thermal treatment, so it has a relatively long service life. In addition, the structure of the planetary reducer is compact and the internal components wear less. It is also one of the reasons for its long life. Also need to consider the life time with precision, not just not able to work without precision life time.

Some Terms of planetary Reducers

Speed reduction ratio: The value of the inputting speed ratio to the output speed.

Stage number: Number of planetary gears’ stage. Because a set of planetary gears cannot meet a large transmission ratio, sometimes two or three sets are needed to meet the user's requirements for larger transmission ratios. Due to the increase of the number of planetary gears, the length of the planetary gearbox will increase and the efficiency will decrease.

Full load efficiency: Refers to the power transmission efficiency of the reducer with the maximum load (failure output torque).

Average lifetime: Refers to the continuous working time when the gearbox is carrying the rated load with the highest input speed.

Rated output torque: The standard output torque value for a planetary gear reducer. At this value, when the output speed is 100 rpm, the life span of the reducer is the average life. Exceeding this value, the average life span of the deceleration will decrease. When the output torque is more than twice the value, the reducer fails.

Lubrication: No need to lubricate. The planetary speed reducer is a full sealing device, so there is no need to use lubricating fat in the entire use period.

Noise: The unit is decibel (DB). This value is measured when the input speed is 3000 rpm/minute, without load, and one meter away from the reducer.

Backlash: Fix the output end, rotate the input end clockwise and counterclockwise, so that when the output end generates the rated torque ±2% torque, there is a tiny corner displacement at the input terminal of the reducer. The unit is arc-min, which is one-sixth of one degree.
