An O-ring, also known as a rubber O-ring, is a circular rubber sealing device with a round cross-section. It is commonly used to seal interfaces of static or dynamic fluids or gases. O-rings are widely utilized in various industrial applications, including automotive, mechanical, electronic, and chemical industries. They are known for their flexibility, durability, and ability to provide effective sealing in a wide range of temperatures and pressures. O-rings are designed to create a tight seal by being compressed between two mating surfaces, preventing leakage and contamination. They are available in different sizes, materials, and hardness levels to suit specific application requirements.
Rubber O Ring Materials
Materials | ||
NR | Natural Rubber | High tensile strength, good ductility |
SBR | Styrene Butadiene Rubber | Uniform quality , less foreign matter but weak mechanical strength , can be mixed with NR , widely used in tire industry , shoe soles , tape , conveyor belt , etc |
BR | Polybutadiene | |
IIR | Butyl Rubber | Gas is less permeable and resistant to heat, sunlight and ozone |
EPDM | Ethylene propylene Rubber | |
CR | Polychloroprene Neoprene | Excellent heat aging, weather resistance, ozone resistance |
XNBR | Carboxylated NBR / Carboxyl Butadience Acylonitrile | This gelatinization is rapid sulfur addition, short scorching time, short safe storage period, compared with the general NBR, excellent wear resistance, other characteristics are similar. |
NBR | Nitrile Rubber ( Buna ) | Resistant to alcohol, it is the most common rubber raw material for oil seal and O-ring at present |
HNBR | Hydrogenated Nitrile / Highly Saturated Nitrile ( HSN ) | Better temperature and weather resistance than NBR, similar oil resistance to NBR, used as seals for new R-134A refrigerant system. |
PU | Polyurethane Rubber | High hardness, high elasticity, abrasion resistance are difficult compared to other rubbers, aging resistance, ozone resistance, oil resistance is also quite good, the general PU air tightness is good |
CSM | Hypalon , Polyethylene | Good heat resistance, weather resistance, ozone resistance, acid resistance, often used for oxidation resistant drugs (except nitric acid, sulfuric acid) |
ACM ( PA ) | Polyacrylate Rubber | It has good resistance to petrochemical oil, high temperature and weather. It is worse than general oil adhesive. It is widely used in automotive transmission system and power system seals. |
ECO | Epichlorohydrin / Hydrin | Good oil resistance, heat resistance and ozone resistance |
VAMAC | Vamac ( Ethylene / Acryllic ) AEM | Petrochemical oil resistance, heat resistance, weather resistance, ozone resistance are good, compared with PA has better temperature, widely used in automotive transmission system and power system seals. |
SIL | Silicone Rubber | Tensile strength is worse than general rubber and does not have oil resistance, heat resistance, weather resistance, ozone resistance, low temperature are excellent, suitable for high and low temperature environment, and alcohol resistance. |
FSIL | Fluorinated Silicone Rubber | Good resistance to oil, solvent and fuel oil, good resistance to high and low temperature, used in space parts, but mostly limited to static seals, its strength and wear resistance are not good. |
FPM / FKM | Fluoro Carbon Rubber | High TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE IS BETTER THAN SIL, CHEMICAL resistance, MOST oil AND several solvents (EXCEPT KETones, LIPids), weather resistance, ozone resistance are good, cold resistance is poor, widely used in automobile, chemical plant parts |

Rubber O Ring Application
Rubber O-rings find diverse applications across various industries
due to their excellent sealing properties. Here are some common
applications of rubber O-rings:
Automotive: O-rings are used in engines, transmissions, fuel
systems, and cooling systems to seal connections, prevent leaks,
and maintain proper fluid flow.
Hydraulic Systems: O-rings are critical components in hydraulic
systems, providing sealing in cylinders, pumps, valves, and
fittings. They withstand high pressures and ensure efficient and
leak-free operation.
Pneumatics: O-rings are utilized in pneumatic systems to seal air
or gas connections, preventing leakage and ensuring reliable
operation of valves, cylinders, and fittings.
Plumbing: O-rings are commonly used in plumbing applications to
create watertight seals in faucets, valves, toilets, and other
plumbing fixtures.
Aerospace and Aviation: O-rings are employed in aircraft engines,
hydraulic systems, fuel systems, and various components that
require reliable sealing under extreme conditions.
Industrial Machinery: O-rings are used in machinery and equipment
to seal moving parts, prevent leaks, and maintain efficient
operation. They can be found in pumps, compressors, valves, and
other mechanical systems.
Electronics: O-rings are used in electronic devices to provide
sealing and protection against moisture, dust, and other
contaminants. They are commonly found in connectors, switches, and
sensors.
Medical and Pharmaceutical: O-rings are utilized in medical and
pharmaceutical equipment, such as syringes, IV devices, and pumps,
to ensure sterile and leak-free connections.
Food and Beverage: O-rings made from FDA-approved materials are
used in food and beverage processing equipment to provide hygienic
seals and prevent contamination.
Oil and Gas: O-rings are used in the oil and gas industry for
sealing applications in pipelines, valves, pumps, and drilling
equipment, ensuring safe and efficient operations.
Rubber O Ring Certificate
Approvals : SGS , NSF , KTW , WRAS , UL , FDA etc . Special requirement is available.
NSF : NSF is specialized in standard setting, product testing and certification services in the fields of public health, safety and environmental protection, and is an authoritative body in the field of public health and safety
KTW : The supplier is required to comply with DVGW (German Gas and Water Association) Regulation W 270 "Propagation of microorganisms on Non-metallic materials". This standard mainly protects drinking water from contamination with biological impurities. All drinking water systems and excipients exported to Europe must be KTW certified. Therefore, if Chinese drinking water systems and excipients are to be exported to European countries, they must pass KTW certification. KTW has been authorized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the certification of safe drinking water.
WRAS : WRAS(Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) certification refers to the Water Regulation Advisory Scheme. WRAS is the certification of the safety of drinking Water in the UK.
UL : Founded in 1894, UL has become one of the world's leading testing and certification organizations with a complete set of management systems, standard development and product certification procedures.
SGS:SGS certification refers to the service that SGS performs compliance certification on targets according to standards, regulations, customer requirements and other conditions. To carry out relevant certification, we must pass inspection, testing, authentication, certification and other means (SGS certification itself is not a certification, but refers to the certification service of SGS)
