Introduction:

Clean Intermittent Catheterisation (CIC) is a method of draining urine via a catheter inserted into the urethra, past the sphincter into the bladder. Once the urine is drained the catheter is removed.Clean Intermittent Catheterisation involves inserting a thin, hollow tube called a catheter into the bladder through the urethra (the tube from which the urine exits your body). You repeat these steps at regular intervals (intermittently) several times a day.

A PVC material intermittent catheter refers to a type of medical device used for urinary catheterization. It is designed to assist individuals who have difficulty emptying their bladder naturally or require temporary drainage of urine.

Material: PVC is a widely used thermoplastic polymer known for its flexibility, durability, and biocompatibility. Intermittent catheters made from PVC are soft and pliable, allowing for easy insertion and removal.

Intermittent Catheterization: Intermittent catheterization involves the periodic insertion and removal of a catheter to drain urine from the bladder. It is typically performed by individuals with urinary retention, neurogenic bladder dysfunction, or other urinary disorders.

Purpose: The primary purpose of intermittent catheters is to facilitate the draining of urine from the bladder when the natural emptying mechanism is impaired. By inserting the catheter through the urethra into the bladder, urine can be removed, helping to prevent bladder distention, urinary tract infections, and other complications associated with urinary retention.

Features: PVC intermittent catheters are available in various sizes, lengths, and tip designs to accommodate different anatomies and individual needs. They often feature drainage eyelets or side holes near the tip to allow urine to flow into the catheter and a drainage bag or collection device.

Sterility: PVC intermittent catheters are typically provided in a sterile, single-use packaging to minimize the risk of infection. It is essential to follow proper hygiene practices and dispose of used catheters appropriately.

Usage and Application: Intermittent catheters are typically self-administered or administered by a healthcare professional. The catheter is inserted through the urethra into the bladder, and once the urine is drained, it is removed. The frequency of catheterization varies depending on the individual's needs and medical condition.

It's worth noting that while PVC intermittent catheters are commonly used, there are also alternative materials available, such as silicone and hydrophilic-coated catheters. The choice of catheter material depends on factors such as patient preference, medical requirements, and any existing allergies or sensitivities.
