The Terminator, a M12 connector molded with a 120 ohm resistor inside it, located at each end of the NMEA 2000 backbone or other devices cable termination. Proper termination helps ensure signal integrity across the entire length of the boat backbone.

FAQ

 

CAN you use 120 ohm termination resistor?

It is well known, in the CAN community at least, that every CAN and CAN FD network should be terminated with a 120 Ohm resistor at each end of the bus. ... If your termination is correct, you should read approximately 60 Ohms (two 120 Ohm resistors in parallel produce a resistance of 60 Ohms).

 

Why do we use 120 ohm termination resistor?

For avoiding reflection we use Transmission Line theory. For the High speed CAN bus the maximum length is 40m, with 1 Mbps speed and maximum of 30 nodes.
