The rear oxygen sensor, also known as the downstream oxygen sensor, is a component located in the exhaust system of a vehicle. It is positioned after the catalytic converter and is responsible for monitoring the efficiency of the catalytic converter and providing feedback to the engine control unit (ECU) or engine management system.
The rear oxygen sensor works similarly to the front or upstream oxygen sensor, but its primary function is to measure the oxygen content in the exhaust gases after they have passed through the catalytic converter. By comparing the oxygen levels before and after the converter, the ECU can evaluate the converter's performance and determine if it is effectively reducing harmful emissions.
