Eileen Gray, born in Ireland in 1879, was not only one of the first women to be admitted art school in London, she put forward revolutionary new theories of design and construction in the 1920s and ’30, gaining the respect of Le Corbusier among others. In 1924, she and her partner at the time, Jean Badovici, began work on their vacation house, E1027 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, in southern France (the name of the house is a play on the letters of their names). Expressing her desire for functional perfection, the fully licensed Adjustable Table is a skillful balance of glass and steel, embodying the classic elements of mid- century modernism.
