Induction heating is the process of heating electrically conductive materials, such as metals and semiconductors, through electromagnetic induction. An induction heater consists of an electromagnet and an electronic oscillator that passes a high-frequency alternating current (AC) through the electromagnet, creating a magnetic field within the coil, which heats and possibly melts the material in question. The eddy currents cause resistive heating and raise the temperature of the workpiece.

 

An important feature of an induction heating process is that the heat is generated inside the object itself without any external heat source. This unique feature allows objects to be heated very quickly and without any external contact, which is beneficial when contamination is an issue.
