The rotor has permanent magnets attached to the motor shaft in alternating north-south polarity. The rotor is supported by two rotary bearings, and is the rotating component of the motor.
The stator is a stack of steel laminations interlaced with multiple coils of copper wire. A servo drive controls the flow of current through these coils to create a spinning electromagnetic field, which in turn causes the rotor to generate torque and spin synchronously with the spinning field. (The flow of current in older servo motors passed through conductive carbon “brushes”, but in a brushless servo motor, the current is controlled with transistors in the servo drive.)
The feedback device is coupled to the rotor. It provides the rotor’s rotational position and velocity to the servo drive. The drive uses this data and changes the electrical current flow through the stator windings in order to control the torque generated by the rotor, and as a result, the velocity and position.
