What is CNC turning?


• The workpiece remains on the spindle while rotating at high speed.
• The cutting tool or center drill tracks the outer or inner circumference of the part to form a geometric shape.
• The tool does not rotate and moves in polar directions (radial and longitudinal).
CNC lathes are widely used because they can produce parts at a higher speed and at a lower unit cost than CNC milling machines. This is especially important for larger volumes.
The main design limitation of CNC lathes is that they can only produce parts with cylindrical profiles (think screws or washers). To overcome this limitation, part features are usually CNC milled in a separate machining step.
