Product Description of  Boiler Economizer


Economizer is a mechanical device intended to reduce energy consumption, or to perform another useful function like preheating a fluid. The economizer is used for other purposes as well boiler, powerplant, and heating, ventilating, and air-conditionin(HVAC) uses are discussed in this article. In simple terms, an economizer is a heat exchanger.

Application:
In boilers, economizers are heat exchange devices that heat fluids, usually water, up to but not normally beyond the boiling point of that fluid. Economizers are so named because they can make use of the enthalpy in fluid streams that are hot, but not hot enough to be used in a boiler, thereby recovering more useful enthalpy and improving the boiler's efficiency. They are a device fitted to a boiler which saves energy by using the exhaust gases from the boiler to preheat the cold water used to fill it (the feed water).

When you purchase a thermal fluid heater, the cost of fuel to operate the heater is a major concern. The amount of fuel needed is related to the thermal efficiency of the heater. Increasing its thermal efficiency reduces the amount of fuel needed as well as operating costs.

An effective way to increase a heater’s thermal efficiency and reduce fuel costs is to install a special heat exchanger in the heater’s exhaust stack. The heat exchanger recovers heat from the exhaust stack that would otherwise be lost into the atmosphere.

This special type of heat exchanger is known generically as an economizer or convection section. It consists of an enclosure that contains coils of pipe, and the enclosure fits between the heater and the bottom of the exhaust stack.

Application of Boiler Economizer


1During boiler operation in typical commercial and industrial applications, approximately 10-20% of the heating value of fuel is expelled with the stack gases to the atmosphere.
2Stack economizers are designed to recover significant amounts of this stack gas energy loss, thereby vastly improving boiler system efficiency.
3There are several considerations when selecting an economizer
4Gas-side Pressure Drop. Added back-pressure on the boiler stack affects the combustion air fan throughput capability. The economizer and combustion air fan(s) must be sized properly in order to assure a suitable system operation and capacity.
5Feedwater Temperature. The feedwater to the economizer must be deaerated and the temperature setpoint minimally at 220oF to prevent tube corrosion.
6Water-side Pressure Drop. Feedwater pumps must be sized to accommodate the economizer pressure drop. Additionally, a continuous modulating feedwater system is required to ensure proper flow rates through the economizer.
