Oil seals, often called a rotary shaft seal or grease seal, closes the gap between stationary and moving components in mechanical equipment — most often rotating shafts — helping prevent lubricant escape and stopping harmful materials, such as dirt, from moving in through the clearance.

Do you apply Lube to rear oil seals before installation?

To begin the seal installation, an important step is to pre-lubricate the seal with the oil or grease you are going to seal. This will reduce the “sliding“ friction force that can damage the seal when installed dry. It also prevents a dry starting condition that can tear the seal material during initial run-in periods.

Is a wheel hub and wheel bearing the same thing?

While the terms can be used interchangeably, in most shops when you say hub bearing it refers to a complete hub assembly and wheel bearing will mean a pressed in split bearing. A hub bearing is not really a big deal unless the car is rusty, it can be changed with common tools.

What causes a wheel hub assembly to go bad?

Wheel vibration and/or wobble. This is generally associated with a damaged or worn tire, wheel or suspension component or severe chassis misalignment. When related to the hub or bearing, this normally indicates the loss of clamp or a bearing with extreme mechanical damage. It also can occur when lug nuts are not properly torqued.
