International Electro technical Commission (IEC) published IEC 60320 to specify appliance couplers for households and similar general purposes. These have become a de facto standard for the electrical interface between the device and the cord on most detachable power supply cords. Power distribution strips also employ this electrical interface between the source and the output cord.

Unlike NEMA which uses the same identifying series number for both male and female ends i.e. (5-15P to 5-15R) IEC 320 uses a sequential even number for male end and odd number for the mating female end i.e. (C14 to C13).
