What voltage and frequency in India?

In India the standard voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. You can use your electric appliances in India, if the standard voltage in your country is in between 220 - 240 V (as is in the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia and Africa). Manufacturers take these small deviations into account. If the standard voltage in your country is in the range of 100 V - 127 V (as is in the US, Canada and most South American countries), you need a voltage converter in India. You can find voltage converters at Amazon. You can also consider a combined power plug adapter/voltage converter.

If the frequency in India (50 Hz) differs from the one in your country, it is not advised to use your appliances. But if there is no voltage difference, you could (at your own risk) try to use the appliance for a short time. Be especially careful with moving, rotating and time related appliances like clocks, shavers and electric fan heaters.

To be sure, check the label on the appliance. Some appliances never need a converter. If the label states 'INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60 Hz' the appliance can be used in all countries in the world. This is common for chargers of tablets/laptops, photo cameras, cell phones, toothbrushes, etc.

What adapter do I need for India?

The type of power adapter, power converter or charger that's needed when visiting India will all depend on the voltage and type of device that you're attempting to power with an Indian power outlet. If you don't know what voltage your device uses then read the section below about how can you tell if you have a dual voltage device before going any further.

Some areas in India do not have access to electricity and suffer from power cuts, it is advised to pack a power bank if you wish to recharge your cellphone whilst in an area without access to power or during a power outage.
If you are visiting India from the US then you will need to bring a suitable plug adapter to fit a US plug into an Indian power outlet. As the voltage is different in India use a power converter if your device or appliance isn't dual voltage and ensure that it can work with a 50hz power outlet.
If your device is 230 volts or is dual voltage and the plug can fit in an Indian power outlet then it will work in India.
If your device can run on 230 volts or is dual voltage but the plug won't fit in an Indian power outlet you'll need to bring a suitable plug adapter for India such a Type D plug adapter. A plug adapter for India (or power adapter) is designed to change the shape of the plug on your device to fit into a plug outlet found in India, but won't convert the voltage from 230 volts to another voltage.
If your device doesn't run on 230 volts and isn't dual voltage you'll also need a power converter for India to convert the voltage from 230 volts to the correct voltage on your device. You'll still need to bring a suitable plug adapter for India if your power converter doesn't use the correct Type D plug adapter.
If you simply want to power one or more USB devices such as a tablet or cell phone then a USB travel power adapter will be more suited and it should be dual voltage, however ensure that you bring one which includes a Type D plug adapter otherwise you'll still need to bring along a suitable plug adapter for India.
