The AISG protocol is based on half-duplex communication and the HDLC protocol. The AISG bus is a single-master multi-slave bus. The communication medium can be RS-485 based using a dedicated cable as specified in the AISG standard, or it can be an OOK carrier injected into the RF antenna feeder cable at the base station site. The master device that controls the communication is called the master, and the slave devices on the bus are called auxiliaries and ALDs (antenna line devices). The main functions can be integrated into the base station. The primary can also be a stand-alone controller installed on the BTS site or a handheld/portable controller typically used during base station site installation. Ancillary device types include RET (Actuator Electronic Tilt Antenna Beam), TMA (Tower Mounted Amplifier), GLS (Geolocation Sensor) or ASD (Alignment Sensor Device).
