Root circle ─ the circle where the bottom of the groove is located.

Indexing circle ── reference circle for calculating gear geometry in the end face. For spur gears, the modulus and pressure Angle on the indexing circle are standard values.

Tooth surface ─ the side surface of the tooth between the top and root cylinders.

Profile ─ the line at which the tooth surface is cut by a specified surface (plane for cylindrical gears).

Tooth line ─ intersection line between tooth surface and indexing cylinder surface.

End pitch PT -- the dividing arc length between the same end profile of two adjacent teeth.

Modulus m - the quotient of pitch divided by PI, in millimeters.

Pitch P -- Reciprocal of modulus, in inches.
