Silver is the best conductor, and is used in certain scientific applications. During WWII,electromagnetic separation of uranium isotopes was used at Oak ridge, TN for the atomic bomb project.Since copper was needed for war production,the Manhattan Project borrowed silver from the government silver depository at West point, to make wire coils for the separators. At the end of the war, the silver was returned to West Point.
The largest use for silver wire is for jewelry and amateur jewelry-making. Although silver is the best electrical conductor, it is simply too expensive for regular use in electrical wiring or electromagnets. Copper is almost as good an electrical conductor and is typically only 15% - 20% the cost of silver.
To my knowledge, there was only one major electrical application for large amounts of silver wire. During the 2nd World War, silver bullion was “loaned” by Fort Knox to make silver magnet wire. The reason was that copper was in very short supply for the war effort, and silver was available from the US Treasury and could be substituted. The insulated silver wire was then used to wind huge electromagnets that were part of uranium isotope separators (called Calutrons in Oak Ridge, Tennessee). After the war was over, the wire was melted down and every last scrap accounted for when it was returned back to the Treasury.
