Applications and types of tungsten carbide rods

Tungsten carbide as a metal compound is remarkable for its robustness with highest melting point of all the elements. Tungsten carbide has high density of 19.3 times that of the water when comparable to that of uranium or gold and much higher (about 17.7 times) than that of lead. Tungsten at an atomic number of 74 is considered to be heaviest element known to be biologically functional with the next heaviest being iodine (Z=53). The tungsten carbide rods as such imbibe the same features or characteristics of tungsten carbide and come with different sizes and shapes.
Tungsten carbide rods are manufactured without holes, with one straight hole, with double straight holes, with 30-degree spiral holes etc. The tungsten carbide rods polished or blank are used as solid drilling tools. They come with a diameter from 0.3mm to diameter 40.mm with lengths from 10mm to 1000mm and they are either grounded or ungrounded. The applications of these rods include as drill bits, end mills and reamers. They come in the straight or twisted and are available in standard lengths of 310 and 330 mm. These rods are manufactured by using advanced extrusion and mold pressing technology with sufficient grade development along with extensive automation.
The main focus of the manufacturers however remains on the production of coolant fed rods for the cutting tooling industry with their applications in various fields of business such as in PCB Tools, Dies/Punches, Blades, Paper Industry, Polymer Extrusion, Gear Cutting and in other Wear Parts. They are available in various grades such as K10T, YG8, YG6, YG6X, YG15, and EK12, EYL50 etc with ISO Code such as K05-K10, K10, K20, and K40-K50 with cobalt content as percentage ranging from 4.5 to 15. The density in g/cm3 ranges from 14 to 15.05, hardness in HRA from 87.6 to 94.3 and TRS as N/mm2 from 1800 to 4000.
These rods are also manufactured as per the customer specifications with different choices in diameters, chemical compositions such as in material compositions including submicron, medium, in coarse grain grades. They are also available in cylindrical and flat section in both as sintered and finished ground condition. Some manufacturers provide in-house facilities that include a comprehensive grinding shop plus EDM wire cutting and spark erosion as well as the capacity to offer tungsten carbide components mechanically retained into premachined steel housings and casings by interference fitting, induction and gas brazing or using adhesive bonding.
