How Do Air Springs Work?
Air springs are load-carrying components used in various applications, including machines, automobiles, and buses. They are part of an air suspension system that provides suspension, isolation, or actuation. Here's how air springs work:
Structure: An air spring consists of a rubber and fabric container, known as a bellows, that is filled with air. The bellows is designed to look like an automobile tire or multiple tires stacked on top of each other .
Load Distribution: When a load is applied to the vehicle or machine, the air spring bellows compresses, and the air inside becomes pressurized. This pressurized air supports the weight of the load, distributing it evenly across the air spring .
Height Maintenance: To maintain the vehicle's height when the load increases, check valves admit additional air from the air-supply tank into the bellows. This ensures that the vehicle remains at the desired height .
Excess Air Venting: When the vehicle rises due to unloading, leveling valves vent excess air from the bellows. This prevents the vehicle from becoming too high and maintains proper suspension .
