Overview

 

The nozzle neck is welded to the flange with a butt weld joint. Slip On. This kind of flanges could be accepted only in low critical services (low pressure and temperature, and no special services). In this type, flange and nozzle neck are not welded with a butt-weld joint, but both fillet welds.

Nozzle piece is essential in the interconnection between pressure vessel, heat exchanger or reactor with the rest of process.

 

The Heavy Barrel Flanges,also called Heavy barrel nozzles which has additional reinforcement beyond the same size lighter wall standard LWN (Long weld neck flange). Common standard lengths are available from stock and can be increased to any longer length to provide the offset needed. These connections are always supplied with a “Nut Stop” unless “Nut Relief” is requested. The inside diameter of these connections for 12” and below are provided with a S80 pipe size bores, 14” and large HB Connections are offered with a bore equal to the nominal pipe size. Special bores, contoured bottoms and other custom variations of all kinds are available upon request.

 

Since pressure vessels are primarily used to separate liquids from the gases, the liquid outlet nozzle sizes are as crucial as the inlet and outlet nozzles. It helps to know that the size of the drain nozzle connection must be according to its service. A typical velocity of 3.0 m/s and an appropriate pressure drop can be used if the liquid is clean and contains minimal solids. Be sure to size the lines connecting to a pump suction accordingly.

Problems arise when you repurpose the pressure vessel from relatively clean service to a dirtier service such as an inlet separator to a plant. A Nominal Pipe Size of 2 inches is the preferable choice for inlet filter separator drain connections, and it should not be smaller than 1 ½ inch NPS.
