A derivative of grade 316 stainless steel, grade 316L is an alloy with a nearly similar chemical composition to the previous metal, except that the carbon content of the alloy has been reduced. The significant reduction in carbon content in ASTM A182 F316L flanges is responsible for the high compatibility with welding and the elimination of intergranular corrosion caused by sensitization of grain boundary precipitates. However, the low carbon content also indicates the lower structural strength of alloy grade 316L. That's why the manufacturer of ASTM A182 GRADE F316L WNRF flanges solves this problem by adding elemental nitrogen to the alloy.
Nitrogen in any austenitic stainless steel component such as Inox 316L slip flanges not only increases austenitic stability, but also increases yield strength. Grade 316L stainless steel flanges are also known as marine grade steel and are therefore used in applications such as marine engineering where welding operations are required. The addition of nitrogen also improves the pitting resistance of the alloy, while ensuring that the mechanical properties of SS 316L blind flanges are nearly equivalent to conventional alloy 316 grades. Molybdenum bearing ASME SA182 F316L pipe flanges have higher creep, rupture stress and tensile strength at elevated temperatures compared to chrome-nickel-based austenitic stainless steel grades. The addition of molybdenum gives stainless steel 316L flanges better overall corrosion resistance, especially higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chlorine-containing environments.

Corrosion resistance
Chromium, molybdenum, nickel and nitrogen all contribute to overall resistance to corrosion by various media. Chromium is the primary agent for imparting corrosion resistance in neutral or oxidizing environments. Chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen increase resistance to pitting corrosion. Nickel imparts an austenitic structure. Both nickel and molybdenum provide higher resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking in reducing environments.
