What is low fin tube?

 

A low fin tube is essentially a single integral tube — made of a singular material — with a smaller fin of about 1/16th of an inch of fin height. The fin is in the tube wall. They are generally used in liquid to liquid or liquid to gas applications such as coolers, condensers and chillers.

 

Low fin tube forming short fins in tube wall that greatly increase the surface area over smooth tube. The fins are Integral formed into the tube wall so the outside diameter of the fins are not larger than the pre-finned smooth tube.

 

Low finned tubes can be provided with a smooth or rifled tube inside surface.Some special work condition added rifling grooves of inside the tube promote turbulant flow and better heat transfer through the tube wall.

 

Integral low fin tube developed as a method of increasing heat transfer performance of fluids while minimizing the size also cost of the heat exchanger. The fin tubes can improve the thermal performance of a heat exchanger without change shell size, flow arrangement or re-positioning of tube. The external surface of the tube is increased by the formation of "low fins".

 

The fin is produced by being rolled from the wall of the tube and is therefore integral with the tube itself. Due to fin rolling the wall thickness beneath the finned section is reduced compared with the plain ends. The bore of the fin section is slightly reduced. Most tubular materials can be finned, however hardness of the material usually determines whether the tubes suitable for finning.
