Overview
Capillaries are small tubes with very fine diameters, usually only a few micrometers to tens of micrometers, used for the transport and separation of liquids. Capillaries have a wide range of applications in many scientific fields, including biology, chemistry, medicine and materials science.
The working principle of capillaries is based on surface tension and capillarity. Surface tension is the force of interaction between the molecules of a liquid that makes the surface of the liquid as small as possible. Capillarity is the lifting and lowering action of a liquid in a tiny channel. As the diameter of the tube gets smaller, the surface tension of the liquid rises more readily overcoming gravity, whereas as the liquid falls, the surface tension is unable to overcome gravity.
Capillary tubes are widely used in the laboratory in techniques such as chromatography and electrophoresis. In chromatography techniques, capillaries are often used as columns to separate mixtures into different components. In electrophoresis techniques, capillaries are often used as separator bands to separate DNA or proteins into different bands.
Capillaries are also widely used in medicine. For example, capillary electrophoresis is used to separate proteins in the bloodstream, which helps doctors diagnose and treat diseases. Capillaries are also used in drug delivery systems, such as injecting drugs through capillaries into tumor sites to better treat cancer.
In the field of materials science, capillaries are also used to create nanotubes and nanofluidic control systems. These systems can be used to fabricate applications such as nanodevices and micro-robots.
While capillaries have a wide range of applications in many fields, they do have some limitations. Capillary tubes have very small diameters, so they are susceptible to contamination and clogging. In addition, capillary tubes are relatively expensive to produce, so they may not be the most economical choice in some cases.
In conclusion, capillary tubes are very useful small tubes that can play an important role in many scientific fields. Despite their limitations, capillary tubes will continue to play an important role in the future as technology continues to evolve and bring more benefits to people.
