Common features are the screw thread covering the whole length of the screw from tip to head and a pronounced thread hard enough for the intended substrate, often case-hardened.

The Self Tapping Screw creates its own thread as it is turned. Whilst it is designed for use in steel it can also be used in timber and plastic. It is available with a zinc plating, a black coating for use in a variety of applications. They are also available with a pan head.
