Metal oxide varistors are key protection devices for power and electronic systems, which directly determine the safety and reliability of system operation. This book systematically introduces the basic research, preparation process, performance regulation and application progress of zinc oxide and other varistors, including conduction and aging mechanism, microstructure electrical characteristics, microstructure testing and microstructure simulation analysis, research progress of high-gradient low residual voltage oxide varistors, titanium oxide, tin oxide and other system varistors, and establishes the correlation between microstructure characteristics and macroscopic characteristics of varistors relationship
Electrical properties
A piezoresistor remains non-conductive during normal operation. As a parallel mode device, varistors are commonly used to suppress line voltage surges when the voltage across the varistor is well below its "clamping voltage". There are two reasons for the failure of varistors.
As a result of unsuccessful attempts to limit very large surges caused by events such as lightning strikes, catastrophic failures occur in which the energy involved is many orders of magnitude higher than the varistor can handle. The subsequent currents generated by the impact may melt, burn or even vaporize the varistor. This thermal runaway is due to a lack of uniformity at individual grain boundary junctions, which causes the dominant current path to fail under thermal stress when the energy (usually measured in joules) of the transient pulse is too high (i.e., significantly above the "absolute maximum rating" manufacturer). The potential for catastrophic failure can be reduced by over-rating or by using specially selected MOVs in parallel.
