FAQs

Am I a good candidate for IPL hair removal?
The ideal candidate for IPL hair removal has dark hair and fair skin. Darker skin absorbs more light, and lighter skin interferes less with the movement of the intense pulsed light into the hair follicle. Dark or tanned skins run a higher risk of pigmentation changes following the procedure.

Keep in mind that it's not impossible to treat darker skinned individuals. Dark skins require a test patch first and will require more visits using more conservative settings.

Are there any side effects to IPL hair removal?
After your treatment you can expect redness in the area. This usually lasts for a couple of hours but can last up to one day. You may feel like you have been sun burnt in the area and this normally takes about one day to subside.

For a few days afterwards there can be some slight scabbing which is normal. We recommend moisturizing with Aloe Vera as this can speed up the healing process.

Does IPL hurt?
Some people describe the lasers pulse as a light tingling or stinging sensation as is usually no more painful than waxing or plucking a few hairs. The vast majority of people have no problems at all with the procedure.

Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others and a topical anesthesia may be used to decrease the sensation further more.

How does IPL hair removal work?
Lasers designed for hair removal emits light at wavelengths to be absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicle (pigment gives hair its colour). The laser is then pulsed only for a fraction of a second.

The duration of each pulse is just long enough to disrupt the hair follicle. When the pigment in the hair follicle absorbs the laser light, energy is converted into heat and these results in thermal damage to the hair follicle. This thermal damage causes delayed re-growth of the hair resulting in permanent destruction of the hair follicle.

How does IPL skin rejuvenation work?
A cooling conductive gel is applied to the skin, then utilising the IPL Quantum, a concentrated white light is pulsed through the skin; causing little to no discomfort. Once the desired area is done, an after care product is applied. After the treatment, pigmentation looks darker, and can sometimes be a little red and raised. This takes about 5-8 days to flake off, leaving a much clearer looking skin.

How does the Quantum IPL system work?
The IPL Quantum HR eliminates hair, employing a method known as selective photothermolysis. This involves disabling hair growth mechanisms by raising the temperature of the hair follicle high enough to damage the follicles germinative cells without damaging the skin and surrounding surface.

What areas of the body can be treated with IPL?
Generally any part of the body can be treated. Exceptions include areas in close proximity to the eyes, the inner ear and nose. The most popular areas for hair removal are the underarms, bikini, upper lip, chin, face, legs, back & chest.
