CNC Manufacturing Parts

CNC turning is a machining process where a rotating workpiece is secured in a chuck or collet,

while cutting tools precisely remove material to achieve the desired shape.

The movement of the cutting tools is controlled along various axes through a computer

numerical control (CNC) system, enabling operations such as turning, facing, threading,

and grooving.

Product Details

CNC machining can be used for a wide variety of materials, with the most common being

aluminum, steel, brass, ABS, Delrin, and nylon.

But really, almost any hard material can be CNC machined.

Common Materials
NameDescription
AluminumHigh machinability and ductility, good strength-to-weight ratio.
Stainless steelHigh tensile strength, corrosion and temperature resistant.
Mild steelHigh machinability and weldability, high stiffness.
BrassLow friction, excellent electrical conductivity, golden appearance.
CopperExcellent thermal and electrical conductivity.
TitaniumExcellent strength to weight ratio, used in aerospace, automotive and medical industries.
POMHigh stiffness, high accuracy, low friction, easy to machine.
ABSCommon thermoplastic, impact resistant, easy to machine.
NylonExcellent mechanical properties, thermal, chemical and abrasion resistant.

CNC Machining Tolerances

Typical machining tolerances fall within the range of ± 0.005 inches or 0.13 millimeters.

Tolerances represent the allowable variation for a specific dimension.

For instance, if a CNC machining tool has a tolerance of ± 0.01 millimeters, it means that the tool

can deviate by 0.01 millimeters in each cut.

When provided with a drawing, Our CNC machining service can achieve CNC parts with tolerances

as tight as ± 0.0002 inches.

In the absence of a drawing, all CNC parts are manufactured according to our ISO 2768 medium

standard. We can also work to even tighter tolerances, such as ± 0.025 millimeters or ± 0.001

inches, when an engineering drawing specifies critical features.

Applications of CNC Turning

CNC turning machines offer versatility in producing a wide array of components, ranging in

complexity.

Here are examples of parts that can be crafted using CNC turning:

1. Shafts and Axles: CNC turning excels in fabricating elongated, cylindrical parts found in

diverse sectors, including automotive and aerospace.

2. Bushings and Bearings: Precision-manufactured bushings and bearings are indispensable

in mechanical systems, reducing friction and facilitating smooth rotational motion.

3. Connectors and Fittings: CNC turning allows for the production of connectors, fittings,

and couplings utilized in plumbing, hydraulic systems, and electrical applications.

4. Fasteners: Screws, bolts, and nuts, crafted with CNC turning, serve as essential components

for assembling various parts in multiple industries, ensuring secure connections.

5. Valves and Valve Components: CNC turning permits the creation of valve bodies, stems,

seats, and intricate components used in fluid control systems.

6. Tooling Components: This includes inserts, toolholders, and bodies utilized in machining

operations, enhancing operational efficiency and precision.

7. Automotive Parts: CNC turning is employed in the production of engine components, pulleys,

brackets, and specialized parts for the automotive industry.

FAQ's

1. How Much Does CNC Machining Cost?

The cost of CNC machining a part is influenced by various factors, including:

1. Material: The choice of material affects cost, with materials like Inconel being more expensive

due to increased tool wear and slower machining.

2. Complexity: Complex features drive up costs, as machining intricate surface shapes is more

time-consuming.

3. Tolerances: Tight dimensional tolerances increase expenses; specifying them unnecessarily on

non-critical features can inflate costs.

4. Surface Finish: Achieving mirror finishes demands specialized tools and strategies, prolonging

machining time and costs.

5. Quantity: Low-volume production costs more per part due to initial setup and programming

costs spread over fewer pieces.

2. Machined Part Tolerances Explained

For most metal geometries, our tolerances are within +0.005" / -0.005". For plastics,

it's typically +/- 0.010". Tolerances may vary for large parts, especially those requiring flatness

after heat treatment.

"As Milled" finish requires a minimum 125 surface finish for CNC parts.

All fabricated parts adhere to a 0.010" dimensional and 1° angular tolerance.

Tapped holes not explicitly noted in the CAD model will match the specified diameters in that model.

Surface treatments like anodization, bead blasting, iridite, powder coating, etc., are only applied if

paid for and acknowledged in advance.

3. Delivery Time and Quotation Turnaround

Our delivery time and quotation process are influenced by the complexity of your project.

For low-complexity parts, expect a lead time of 2-3 days. As complexity increases, the lead time

can range from 2-5 days. High-complexity parts may require a lead time of 5-15 days.

Quotation turnaround time varies based on complexity as well.

For straightforward designs, we can provide a quote within 1 business day or even faster.

However, for more intricate projects, the quoting process may take 3 or more business days.

If you have a design that needs assessment and a quote from our team, please don't hesitate

to contact us.
