Good ECG signal quality—it is something every clinician strives to secure every time they monitor a patient’s heart. Acquisition of quality ECG data is critical in providing accurate and timely diagnosis and patient treatment. Poor ECG quality can:

  • result in the monitor’s inability to recognize the R-wave, thus affecting arrhythmia analysis and the ability to perform procedures such as synchronized cardioversion and transcutaneous pacing,
  • inhibit reading a 12-Lead accurately, and
  • result in false alarms and unnecessary troubleshooting, potentially delaying treatment.

How To Use

Ensure that the ECG machine is turned off and unplugged before connecting any cables.

Identify the cable ends: There are 1 to 6 colors of leads usually. Each colored lead has a specific placement on the patient. The color code can vary depending on the brand, so refer to the user manual or look for labels on the cable ends to identify which lead corresponds to each limb placement.

Prepare the patient: Ensure that the patient's chest is dry and free from any lotions, creams, or oils that can interfere with electrode adhesion. It is also essential to make sure the patient is comfortable and relaxed during the procedure.

Connect the cables to the patient: Attach the corresponding color-coded lead to the appropriate limb. Generally, the black lead represents the right wrist, the red lead represents the left wrist, the green lead represents the right leg, and the white lead represents the left leg.

Attach the ECG electrodes: Place the ECG electrodes on the patient's body. The electrodes should be placed on the chest in specific locations known as V1 to V6, as indicated by the manufacturer. Follow the instructions provided by the ECG machine or consult the user manual for the correct placement.

Connect the cables to the ECG machine: Insert the other end of the limb lead cables into the corresponding inputs on the ECG machine. The inputs are usually labeled with the corresponding color code (e.g., right wrist, left wrist, right leg, left leg).

Turn on the ECG machine: Once the cables and electrodes are securely connected, turn on the ECG machine and follow its instructions to begin the recording process. The machine will display the ECG waveform, and you can proceed with interpreting the results or consult a healthcare professional if needed.
