Principles of Operation Mindray Spo2 module

SpO2 monitoring is a non-invasive technique to measure oxyhemoglobin levels and pulse rate by measuring light absorbance of a selected wavelength.

The light generated by the sensor penetrates the tissue and is converted into an electrical signal by the sensor's light detectors. The SpO2 module processes the electrical signal and displays the SpO2 and pulse waveform and digital values on the screen.

The sensor measures at a nominal wavelength of 660 nm with red LEDs and 940 nm with infrared LEDs. The maximum optical power of the LED light is 4 mW

Warning

  • SpO2 values may be overestimated in the presence of Hb-CO, Met-Hb, or chemicals that dilute the dye.
  • Before monitoring, check whether the sensor cable is OK. Do not use the SpO2 sensor if the packaging or the sensor is damaged.
  • Check the sensor cable fault detection before you start monitoring. Disconnect the SpO2 sensor cable from the connector. The display shows "SPO2 SENSOR OFF" and activates the acoustic alarm.
  • The cables of the ES (electrosurgical) devices and the SpO2 cables must not be tangled.
  • Do not place the SpO2 sensor on extremities with arterial or intravenous catheters.
  • Do not take SpO2 and NIBP measurements on the same limb

simultaneously. Obstruction of blood flow during NIBP measurements can adversely affect SpO2 readings.

  • Long-term continuous monitoring may increase the risk of burns at the sensor site. In neonates and patients with poor perfusion or photosensitive skin, it is especially important to verify sensor placement and ensure proper fixation. Check the position of the probe every 2-3 hours and switch to another position if the skin deteriorates. Different patients may need multiple tests.

Principles of Operation Masi-mo Spo2 module

The pulse oximeter measurement module (Masi-mo Set, MS-7) is based on three basic principles:

  • Oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin differ in their absorption of red and infrared light (spectrophotometry).

  • The amount of arterial blood in the tissue and the light absorbed by the blood change during the pulse (plethysmography).

  • Arteriovenous shunts are highly variable, and fluctuations in venous blood absorption are an important component of pulse noise.

The MS-7 uses a similar operating principle to conventional SpO2 modules. Calculates SpO2 values by applying red and infrared light to the capillary bed and measuring the change in light absorption during the pulsation cycle. The red and infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) of the SpO2 sensor act as light sources and the photodiodes act as photodetectors.

Principles of Nellcor Spo2 Operation

Bones, tissues, pigmentation and veins usually absorb a certain amount of light over time. The arteriolar bed normally pulsates and absorbs varying amounts of light during the beat. The Nellcor SpO2 module uses a pulse oximeter to measure functional oxygen saturation in the blood. Pulse oximeters work by attaching a probe to a small, pulsating arterial vessel, such as a finger or toe. The sensor contains a double light source and a photodetector. The percentage of light absorbed is converted into functional oxygen saturation (SpO2).

Overview of oxygen saturation

Pulse oximeters are based on two principles:

1. Oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin absorb red and infrared light differently (ie, spectrophotometrically).

2. The volume of arterial blood in the tissue (and therefore the absorption of light by the blood) changes during the pulse (i.e. plethysmography).
