Following his successful kite experiments to capture lightning, Franklin, in studying the consistency of lightning with electricity generated by artificial friction, hypothesised from the analogy between the two that, as artificially generated electricity was absorbed by the tip, lightning could also be absorbed by the tip. This prompted him to devise kite experiments, the success of which in turn confirmed his conjecture.
