Electric winches can be broken down into two categories: those connected to an electric motor and those powered by batteries, such as those attached to a car or truck. Electric winches are recommended for intermittent use due to extreme temperatures. We recommend that you use a winch with a thermal fuse to avoid damage to the winch when the load is too heavy or it is used too often. Also, choose a winch that is more heat resistant than you need to avoid overheating.
If you choose a battery powered winch, make sure the battery you are using is strong enough to power it. With a 12 volt power supply, the winch can draw over 400 amps peak.
Internal combustion driven winches are heavier and more expensive than electric winches. But they typically have a 100% duty cycle, so they can be used continuously.
The hydraulic winch is connected to the hydraulic circuit that drives the drum. They also have a 100% duty cycle and have a high load capability. However, the hydraulic system needs to be fit for the purpose: hydraulic winches may require pressures of up to 160 bar and flow rates of up to 60 liters per minute (l/min). This type of winch is commonly used on offshore vessels or platforms.
Hand winches are used for lighter loads. Manual winches are easy to install because they don't need to be connected to a power source.
