Description
Also known as an oil seal, shaftseal, or lip seal. Its function is
to exclude dust, dirt, water or any other contaminant on one side
whilst retaining lubricant on the other. Generally it has been
developed as a means of protecting the bearings of rotating shafts.
The basic operation of a shaft seal has the flexible lip held
against the rotating part (usually the shaft) whilst the casing (or
O.D.) is pressed into the housing or bore holding the seal in
place. The sealing lip needs some form of lubrication to avoid
overheating and are usually energized by means of a garter spring.
