Worm Gear Boxes are used in automobile steering mechanisms, rudders, hoists and rolling mills. It is comprises of worm shaft and worm wheel which decrease the input speed and transmit torque to the system.
The size of gearbox will be small as compare to spur gear system. The gearing ration can maintained as per the number of starts. It has 30 teeth, due to which its reduction ration is 30:1.
Types of worm gear:
There are three types of woarm gear Throated or single throated, Non throated and Double throated.

• Single ThroatedIn these gears, the worm wheel is the main component which is throated .
• Non throatedIn this, all machining process is carried out around the circumference of worm wheel.
• Double throated: In this, both the gears are throated, which results in higher torque loading capacity.

The main benefits of using this product is that it can be self locked. The auto locking of the this gear is dependent on lead angle, friction coefficient and pressure angle,. At the time of large ratio gear and a start worm, the direction of transmission is not reversible.
