The end of J1939 female and male plugs can be overmolded or
not, according to your needs.
The J1939 female plug is Type 2, so its Pin F is with smalller
diameter like Pin C and Pin J. Type 2 J1939 female plugs can be
compatible with Type 1 or Type 2 J1939 male plugs.
The OBD2 female plug is with KET terminals which make the OBD2
female plug more endurable.
Pin assignment or pin out
Generally speaking, the pin assignment or pin out will be like this
(4 pins to be connected):
OBD2 female | Signal | J1939 female | J1939 male |
5 | Ground | A | A |
16 | Battery | B | B |
6 | J1939, CAN-H | C | C |
14 | J1939, CAN-L | D | D |
Sometimes, the pin assignment or pin out can also be like this (6 pins to be connected):
OBD2 female | Signal | J1939 female | J1939 male |
5 | Ground | A | A |
16 | Battery | B | B |
6 | J1939, CAN-H | C | C |
14 | J1939, CAN-L | D | D |
2 | J1708-H | F | F |
10 | J1708-L | G | G |
The 6-wire cable also includes wiring for the J1708 lines. If you
do not need the J1708 wires, it is better not to connect them as
sometimes the added lines can interfere with the operation of some
GPS trackers.
The pin assignment or pin out can be also customized according to
your needs.
Application
This is a cable between a J1939 round Deutsch 9-pin female
connector, a J1939 Deutsch 9 pin male connector and an OBD2 style 16-pin connector (female vehicle
side - mates with an OBD2 test connector). The J1939 +/- data lines
are connected to the CAN +/- lines, and the power and ground lines
are also connected.
The common application is to connect telematics or fleet management devices such as GPS Trackers and ELDs to a vehicle that has the 9-pin round
Deutsch connector.
This cable will also allow OBD2 diagnostic devices or
scanners (with the appropriate software) to connect to the
round J1939 connector. Bear in mind that most OBD2 software and
scanners are based on reading PIDs, which are single parameters.
J1939 is a PGN based protocol, where each PGN contains multiple
parameters. Your scan tool must be able to handle PGNs if it is to
work with this cable.
