A stable is a building in which livestock, especially horses, are kept. It usually consists of separate stalls for individual animals and livestock. There are various types of stables in use today, from the American-style barn with a door at each end and individual stalls inside, to free-standing stables with top and bottom-opening doors. Additionally, the term 'stable' can also refer to a group of animals kept by one owner, regardless of housing or location.
The exterior design of a stable can differ based on climate, building materials, and culture. Materials used for construction can range from masonry, wood, to steel. Furthermore, stables vary widely in size. Facilities, such as those found at race tracks, may house hundreds of animals, whereas a small building may only contain one or two.
When building a new stable, several factors need to be taken into account. All stables should be safe, comfortable and spacious for the horse, and also hygienic. Horses prefer to be outdoors whenever possible, though with the right stable design tips, they can also enjoy their time kept indoors.
