A cenosphere, also sometimes called microspheres, is a light, hollow sphere, made primarily of silica and alumina with air or inert gas fillings, which is produced as a byproduct of coal combustion in thermal power plants.
Most cenospheres are “harvested” or collected from the ash ponds after being separated from the ashes by flotation. Ash ponds are the final resting place for fly ash when wet removal is carried out. The wet cenospheres are dried, processed according to specifications and packaged to meet customer requirements.
Not all cenospheres are the same. In fact, they can be quite different. The color and physical properties of the cenospheres depend on the composition of the coal used and the temperature of the furnace of the power plant. As long as these two factors remain constant, the properties of the cenósforo will be fairly constant. We are fortunate that our conditions are such that almost white, high-quality cenospheres are formed, and that they have been consistent over the past few years.

As a result, the different grades of cenospheres have their own typical industrial applications, to name a few:
– a component in lightweight insulating (refractory) products
– a filler for paints, lacquers, and plastics
– a lightweight aggregate in concretes
– a filler in soundproofing bituminous rubbers … etc.
The main benefits of the cenospheres are: weight reduction, increased filler loading, reduced shrinkage, reduced viscosity, increased fireproofing, increased lubricity, increased refractoriness and savings in transportation.
In a thermal power plant, the burning coal process produces fly ash containing ceramic particles made mainly of alumina and silica. These particles are part of the fly ash produced in the combustion process. They occur at high temperatures of 1,500 to 1,750 ° C (2,730 to 3,180 ° F) through a complicated chemical and physical transformation.
Cenospheres are the lightest particles that are contained in flying ash. These particles have three types of structures. Solid particles are called precipitators, hollow particles are called cenospheres, and the rest are called planispheres. Its chemical composition and structure varies considerably depending on the composition of the coal that generated them.
