Try to reduce loss of optical fiber as much as possible is one of the most important matter in optical fiber communication. The so-called loss refers to the attenuation in per unit length of optical fiber. When the signal is being transmitted in the transmission medium, a part of the energy may be converted into heat or be absorbed, this resulting in signal strength is keeping reduced and this phenomenon is called attenuation. The unit is dB/km. The fiber loss directly influences the transmission distance or interval distance of relay station, signal attenuation is not only the evaluation of communication quality, but also directly affects expansion and upgrade of the communication system, as well as relay distance in cabling arrangement. Therefore, understanding and reducing loss of optical fiber has important practical significance for optical fiber communication.

The main factors causing fiber attenuation are intrinsic, bending, extrusion, impurity, nonuniformity, and mating and so on: Intrinsic is the inherent loss of optical fiber, including Rayleigh scattering, intrinsic absorption, etc.; Bending: when the fiber bends, some light in the fiber will be lost because of scattering; Extrusion: loss resulting from minor bending of an optical fiber when squeezed. Impurity: loss of absorption and scattering of light by an impurity in an optical fiber; Inhomogeneous: loss due to uneven refractive index of optical fiber; Docking: loss happen in fiber docking, such as: different axis (concentricity of single-mode fiber requires less than 0.8um), the end face and the axis is not perpendicular, uneven end face, mating core diameter mismatch and poor splicing quality and so on.
