Foam tubes, also called foam pipes, are widely used in various application such as heat insulation and shock absorption.

Polyethylene foam tubes come in a variety of diameters and lengths and are an effective solution for liquid, gas, and fluid transfer applications. They are formed by heating polymer compounds, melting them and fitting them into different shapes of molds in extruder. 

Regarding the foam pipe insulation, the main benefits are that they are inexpensive and allow insulated tubes. Wrapping pipes in foam keep the water inside them hot for a long period of time, getting rid of the need to let the water run after each use waiting for the heat to come, which in turn saves a considerable amount of water and money.

Step-by-step instructions
Measure the pipes. Starting at the water heater, measure lengths of insulation needed to cover all accessible hot water pipes, especially the first 3 feet of pipe from the water heater. It's also a good idea to insulate the cold-water inlet pipes for the first 3 feet.
Cut the insulation to the lengths needed.
Place the pipe sleeve so the seam will be face down on the pipe.
Tape, wire, or clamp (with a cable tie) it every foot or two to secure the pipe sleeve to the pipe.
