Emergency Exit Light:

An emergency exit light, also known as an emergency exit sign or simply exit light, is a lighting fixture designed to provide illumination and guidance during emergencies or power outages. Its primary purpose is to assist occupants in locating and safely navigating to the nearest exit in a building. Here are some key features and characteristics of emergency exit lights:

1.Illuminated Exit Sign: An emergency exit light typically includes an illuminated exit sign with a recognizable pictogram or text indicating the direction of the nearest exit. The sign is designed to be easily visible and legible in normal and emergency lighting conditions.

2.Light Source: Exit lights commonly use LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology as their light source due to its energy efficiency, brightness, and long lifespan. LED exit lights consume less power and require less maintenance compared to traditional incandescent or fluorescent lighting.

3.Backup Battery: Emergency exit lights are equipped with built-in rechargeable batteries that automatically activate when the main power supply fails. These batteries ensure continued operation of the exit light during power outages or emergencies, typically for a minimum duration of 90 minutes or as mandated by local regulations.

4.Mounting Options: Exit lights can be wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, or recessed into the building structure, depending on the specific installation requirements and architectural considerations.

5.Compliance and Standards: Emergency exit lights must adhere to applicable safety codes, regulations, and standards specific to the region. These standards ensure that the exit lights meet requirements for visibility, illumination levels, pictogram design, and other essential factors for effective emergency evacuation.

6.Testing and Maintenance: Regular testing and maintenance of emergency exit lights are necessary to ensure their proper functionality. This includes periodic functional tests, battery checks, cleaning, and record-keeping to demonstrate compliance with safety regulations.

7.Emergency exit lights are commonly found in various commercial, industrial, and public buildings, such as offices, schools, hospitals, shopping malls, and theaters. Their presence is crucial for ensuring the safety of occupants by providing clear guidance and illumination during emergency situations, facilitating a quick and orderly evacuation process.

Monthly Testing

This only requires a short test to check that everything is working properly. Use the test key to ensure that all emergency lights are on when the mains power is off and check the enclosures to ensure they are clean and show no signs of damage. Once mains power is restored, check that they are fully charged again.

Also most emergency lights or exit signs have a small "test" button somewhere in the housing. You can press and hold this button for thirty seconds to test the bulb and battery. This method works fine if you have a small number of devices that can be easily accessed. The light should come on and stay at the same brightness level for a full 30 seconds. If the lights dim immediately, or if some bulbs do not work, then you should contact us to replace the bulbs or batteries in the fixture.

Annual Testing

Locate the circuit breaker or fuse that supplies power to the emergency light or exit sign. (If they are not properly marked, you may need to contact an electrician.) Turn off the circuit breakers and observe the lights to determine if they are working properly during the three-hour test period.
