Aluminum casting material

There are two types of aluminum logs, primary and secondary. It is mainly composed of pure aluminum, and it is mainly composed of raw materials and scraps. There are three components used to make secondary aluminum when the furnace is charged: raw material, scrap, and hardener. Bonnell Aluminum's Carthage, Tennessee and Newnan, Georgia foundry facilities manufacture secondary logs. However, all billets/logs are within the specifications of the Aluminum Association.

Primary aluminum: 99.9% pure aluminum. There are three forms of primary aluminum purchased: T-bar, aluminum billet / aluminum block, aluminum ingot

Scrap: Materials purchased from external sources and materials generated within a factory.

Hardener: Elements are added to the aluminum bath to increase strength and impart properties to the final product such as finish, strength and grain refinement. The elements are as follows: silicon (Si), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), magnesium (Mg), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), titanium (Ti) and boron). Silicon, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, chromium and zinc are used to increase strength and improve finish. Titanium and boron are used for grain refinement, which is a reduction in grain size, resulting in more consistent grains and better extrudability.

 

Preparation preparation

The first step in adding the furnace is to add the right amount of alloying agent: scrap, raw material and hardener. A charge is a mixture of raw materials that are melted and mixed to make the alloy. Raw materials and waste are first added to the furnace. The cast alloy determines the amount of scrap and raw material used to charge the furnace. Raw materials and waste are preheated to remove moisture, which will cause an explosion.

Aluminium

To calculate how much material you need to add to the furnace, you must first know how much healing is left from the last drop of the furnace. A healing is the remaining metal left in the furnace after a heat has been completed. A drop is the act of pulling a pin in the furnace and allowing the aluminum to flow into the pot until the formation of the log is complete. The formula for calculating how many pound primes to add is:

Prime (lbs) = [Charge (lbs) - Heal (lbs) ] * [Target's Prime]

Once the raw material is melted, place the scrap in the furnace until the furnace is full and allowed to melt. Aluminum has a melting point of 1215 degrees Fahrenheit.

Degassing / Fluxing

Degassing is the removal of hydrogen from molten metal by passing a gas mixture up the melt. Flux is a substance that promotes fusion, especially of metals or minerals. Flux can cause impurities such as alkalis, sodium and lithium (resulting in poor material surface finish) to rise to the surface of the bath. Once degassing is complete, sample and analyze for appropriate chemical composition.

Scum is a mixture of alumina and non-metallic materials that float on the surface of molten aluminum. When aluminum is added to an already painted, anodized or dirty furnace, dross is created. The dross falls off the top of the molten aluminum into the dross pan. The dross was cooled with argon to eliminate oxygen from the mixture and prevent the mixture. Heat is the temperature at which aluminum will burn. Recycling dross to recover aluminum from it.

Add hardener

Photograph and analyze samples using a spectrometer. A spectrometer determines the concentration of alloying elements by comparing the relative intensities of the wavelengths produced when the sample is irradiated with an electric spark. Hardeners such as silicone and magnesium are added to bring the alloying agent concentration to the specifications of the alloy being cast.

The temperature of the metal must be between 1300-1340 degrees Fahrenheit, the analysis must be within the specified range, and degassing must be complete before the descent can begin. The casting process used at Bonnell Aluminum is called direct cooling casting because cooling of the log occurs in the mold itself, through which water flows. After all the criteria have been completed, the descent can begin. Safety equipment must be installed before firing the furnace. Tapping is the process of pulling the plug pins out of the stove so the aluminum can flow into the slots and pans.

Q: What is the thickness of the anodizing? Can you do 12um?
A: Our normal thickness is about 10 um. Yes, we can do 15 microns and above.

 

Q: What colors can powder coatings be used for? The thickness of the powder coat?
A: We can do any color for powder coating as long as you can provide color samples. Our usual powder coating thickness is 60-80um.
