1. introduction

The universal testing machine (UTM), also known as a universal tester, materials testing machine, materials test frame or tensometer, is used to test the tensile strength and compressive strength of materials. It can perform many standard tensile and compression tests on materials, components and structures, in other words, that it is versatile.

3. parameters can be measured

 

For tensile test, the universal testing machine can measure following parameters according to different materials (not limit to the following):

Elongation: increase in the original gauge length at any moment during the test

Percentage total extension at maximum force: total extension (elastic extension plus plastic extension) at maximum force, expressed as a percentage of the extensometer gauge length

Percentage plastic extension at maximum force: plastic extension at maximum force, expressed as a percentage of the extensometer gauge length

Percentage total extension at fracture: total extension (elastic extension plus plastic extension) at the moment of fracture, expressed as a percentage of the extensometer gauge length

Maximum tensile force: highest force that the test piece withstands during the test

Stress: at any moment during the test, force divided by the original cross-sectional area of the test piece

Tensile strength: stress corresponding to the maximum force

Yield strength: when metallic material exhibits a yield phenomenon, stress corresponding to the point reached during the test at which plastic deformation occurs without any increase in the force

Upper yield strength: maximum value of stress prior to the first decrease in the force

Lower yield strength: lowest value of stress during plastic yielding, ignoring any initial transient effects

Proof strength/ plastic extension: stress at which the plastic extension is equal to a specified percentage of he extensometer gauge length

Proof strength, total extension: stress at which total extension (elastic extension plus plastic extension) is equal to a specified percentage of the extensometer gauge length

Permanent set strength: stress at which, after removal of force, a specified permanent elongation or extension, expressed respectively as a percentage of original gauge length, or extensometer gauge length, has not been exceeded.

Modulus of elasticity: quotient of change of stress and change of percentage extension in the range of evaluation, multiplied by 100%

 

For compression test, this universal testing machine can measure following (not limit to the following):

Compression stress,

proof strength, non-proportional compression,

proof strength, total compression,

compressive yield strength,

upper compressive yield strength,

lower compressive yield strength,

compressive strength,

compressive modulus of elasticity

 

The universal testing machine can also make bending and flexural test, shear test, peel test, high and low temperature test, assurance loading test, wedge test, etc. if equipped with relative test fixtures.

 

 

4. features

This universal testing machine adopts 2 screws and 2 or 4 columns, precise load cell to measure the load. Its crosshead can move up or down at a constant speed.

 

This universal testing machine can program the crosshead speed or conduct cyclical testing, allow testing at a constant force, testing at constant deformation, testing at constant displacement, etc.

 

This testing machine can equip with extensometers to measure the extension or deformation.

 

According to test requirement for temperature, humidity, pressure, etc, special device, such as environmental chamber can be placed around the test specimen to do test in certain temperature, humidity or pressure.

 

Matched with various test fixture, like peal, puncture, tear, pneumatic grip, belt tension, etc. This UTM can be used to metal, non-metal, composite materials like rubber, steel wire, plastic, seat belt, textile character test.

 

Protecting functions of over load, over current, over voltage, crosshead limit moving space protection, auto stop at break.
