Duplex stainless steel was developed to solve the common corrosion problems encountered with 300 series stainless steels. "Duplex" incomplete means a series of austenitic stainless steels, such as 304 stainless steel, or pure ferritic stainless steel, such as 430 stainless steel.
The advantage of a duplex structure is that it combines the good qualities of ferritic alloys (stress corrosion cracking resistance and high strength) with austenitic alloys (easy to manufacture and corrosion resistant).
